Feb 28, 2025'A B—ch Move': The White Lotus Creator Responds to Emmy Winner's Exit After Alleged Feud
The White Lotus is a critically acclaimed, Emmy-winning series. It's a social satire about the dynamics between the guests of luxury resorts and other guests and employees, featuring many unexpected twists.
While working on the anthology series has run smoothly so far, as the series had featured a different cast made up of many familiar names every season, it recently featured its own drama. A few days ahead of its Season 3 finale, series creator Cristóbal Tapia de Veer, who scored the first three seasons, revealed he would be leaving the series. After the comments about their creative differences, the show's creator and director Mike White responded to his departure when speaking to Howard Stern, via The Hollywood Reporter.
Wood opens up about her character's tragic journey and why she still gets "what she wants" by the season's end.
"I announced to the [editorial] team a few months ago that I was not coming back, that I was leaving," de Veer said, adding that he was "sure" about the decision. The composer explained that the change in Season 3's intro theme led to several disagreements. "Mike cut that - he wasn't happy about that. At that point, we already had our last fight forever, I think. So he was just saying 'no' to anything."
I don’t think he respected me.
Responding to de Veer's departure, White explained, "I honestly don’t know what happened, except now I’m reading his interviews because he decides to do some PR campaign about him leaving the show."
Schwarzenegger says there was one moment in The White Lotus Season 3 finale that was "the most profound" of his career.
"I don’t think he respected me. He wants people to know that he’s edgy and dark and I’m, I don’t know, like I watch reality TV. We never really even fought," White claimed. "He says we feuded. I don’t think I ever had a fight with him — except for maybe some emails. It was basically me giving him notes."
The show's creator explained, "I don’t think he liked to go through the process of getting notes from me, or wanting revisions, because he didn’t respect me. I knew he wasn’t a team player and that wanted to do it his way. I was thrown that he would go to The New York Times to sh—t on me and the show three days before the finale. It was kinda of a b—ch move."
The White Lotus received numerous accolades, including 15 Primetime Emmy Awards, and three of them were for the composer. "By the time the third season came around, he’d won Emmys and he had his song go viral, he didn’t want to go through the process with me, he didn’t want to go to sessions. He would always look at me with this contemptuous smirk on his face like he thought I was a chimp or something... he’s definitely making a big deal out of a creative difference," White continued.
Even sans its Emmy-winning composer, the anthology show will go on. HBO has already renewed The White Lotus for Season 4, a decision the giant announced even before the premiere for the recently-wrapped Season 3. It's expected the show will continue its star-studded cast, although no announcements have been made about the cast, release date, or new location.
However, in a new interview, creator Mike White teased a different location for The White Lotus Season 4, which have been all filmed at different Four Seasons resorts. He revealed, "For the fourth season, I want to get a little bit out of the crashing waves of rocks vernacular." One thing will remain the same: "But there’s always more room for more murders at the White Lotus hotels."
